Oregon State University is a land, sea, sun, and space grant institution mandated to provide applied research leadership for the State of Oregon, the United States, and the international community. Oregon State University has long been recognized as a leader among land grant universities for its involvement in international outreach, research and development. For over five decades the university's faculty have been extensively involved in international development research and outreach initiatives with funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development and other federal and international development agencies. The rationale for global outreach is to expand OSU's land-grant tradition of outreach service to encourage international and global initiatives that directly benefit the citizens of Oregon, the nation and the world. Higher education institutions must lead the way and be responsive to the evolving landscape and to changes introduced by global events such as 9/11, SARS, the HIV Aids pandemic, as well as major natural disasters and new health and security crises.
