The safety of students, staff, and faculty traveling abroad is a top priority for Oregon State University.  Whether travelers are abroad through a faculty-led, exchange, internship or program with an affiliated organization, it is important to note that Oregon State University Division of International Programs staff monitors current international events, maintains contact with community members while abroad and collaborates with in-country partners to provide the best response and available resources to students, faculty and staff in the event of an emergency.

*Note that missed scholarship deadlines, delayed or canceled flights, personal communication issues, and non-emergency international insurance questions are NOT considered emergencies. Please contact the appropriate University unit during regular business hours.

Emergency communication preparedness

OSU’s Office of Global Opportunities within the Division of International Programs provides international travelers with crisis response guidelines in the event of an emergency.  Travelers should carry the following numbers in written format on emergency contact cards (printable PDF) and enter the numbers into their mobile phone:

  1. The local equivalent of 911 for the country in which you are traveling.
          -Keep in mind that in many countries there may be a different number for police, fire and ambulance.
          -Also bear in mind that responders may not be proficient in English, and access and response times may vary depending on your location.
  2. The number and emergency after hours number for the local U.S. (or your country of citizenship) Embassy or Consulate for the country or region in which you are traveling.
  3. Up-to-date contact information for a family member or friend in the United States who can be contacted during an emergency by a responder abroad.  Consider having this information in both English and the local language.
