If you plan to transfer from Oregon State University (OSU) to another school in the US, you must notify the Office of International Services (OIS) at OSU so that a “Transfer Out” may be processed in the Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). OIS will only transfer your SEVIS record to the new school after you submit a Transfer Out Form; you must work with admissions personnel at the new school to transfer academic credits and gain admission to a program there.
Requesting a transfer of your SEVIS record:
Obtain full admission to another school in the US.
Fill out the Transfer out form. Obtain all necessary signatures (if applicable).
Turn in completed Transfer out form and a copy of your admission letter to the Office of International Services.
An International Student Advisor at OSU releases your SEVIS record to your new school based on the release date you indicate on the form.
Please Note: Although you may be applying to many schools, your SEVIS record can only be transferred to one school within 5 months of your last day of attendance. If you wish to cancel your transfer, you must notify OIS before your transfer release date. Once your SEVIS record has been released to another school, OSU will no longer have access to it.
The date your SEVIS record is released to the new school is referred to as the “transfer release date.” Things to remember when choosing a transfer release date:
Unless you are on an approved vacation term or plan to withdraw from classes, OIS generally will not transfer your record before the end of a term.
Never withdraw from classes without approval from an International Student Advisor. Withdrawing without approval = a violation of your F-1 status.
If you plan to transfer after completing an academic program or Optional Practical Training (OPT), you must request a transfer before the end of your 60 day grace period.
You must plan to start studying within 5 months or the next available term to be eligible to transfer.
Your new school may ask you to have an International Student Advisor in our office complete a “transfer clearance form” which generally asks about your immigration status and SEVIS release date. Federal law prevents us from releasing information about your academic record to the new school without your permission. Submitting a transfer clearance form alone will not allow us to transfer your SEVIS record to another school. You must still complete the “F-1 Transfer Out Form” to request a transfer of your SEVIS record.
Students holding an F-1 visa are only authorized to work on-campus at the school that holds their SEVIS record. Once your SEVIS record has been transferred to another school, you will no longer be eligible to work on-campus at OSU.
Your OPT authorization will end once your SEVIS record has been transferred to another school, even if the OPT end date on the Employment Authorization Document (EAD) extends beyond the transfer release date. If you request a transfer of your SEVIS record while on OPT, you should carefully consider your transfer release date so that your employment authorization does not end too soon.
Before requesting a SEVIS transfer, we strongly encourage sponsored students to obtain approval from their sponsor & complete the academic term.
Under the terms of agreement with your sponsor, OSU is obligated to notify your sponsor regarding your intentions to discontinue your studies at our University. Any financial or other adverse sponsorship consequences resulted from unapproved transfer or withdrawal are your responsibility.
Please note: If you are withdrawing from courses after the 100% refund deadline in Week 1, your sponsor may not cover the costs for tuition and fees for the quarter in which you are terminating your enrollment.
