Santiago, Dominican Republic
Application deadline EXTENDED: Apr. 15, 2017
This program is designed for students interested in learning about the cultural, language and factors surrounding and supporting healthy living for Dominican Republic individuals. We will not assume or judge that the present lifestyle is unhealthy, but rather expose students to understand how DR manages health of its people and explore their cultural values around health. The goal is for students to gain exposure to working with families and individuals in need, learning to interact and communicate successfully with them. Ideally, this provides insights into similar values that may be practiced by immigrants in the US from this cultural group or others. It provides an exposure that allows students to recognize the holistic picture of the influences of health; and to understand approaches in supporting diverse cultural groups efforts to practice healthy lifestyles.
Through this 4-week program, students will earn eight (8) credits applicable to Field Experience, Practicum and/or Service Learning requirements or options.
Student who are Pell Eligible may apply to the Gilman Scholarship.
