Program Details: 

This June 15- 23, 2014, Athletics will embark on its fourth Beavers Without Borders International Service Learning program.

For 9 days, a group of 10 student athletes, OSU alumnus Ken Simonton and OSU Political Science Professor David Bernell will learn about the history and culture of the Dominican Republic and simultaneously help with the construction and renovation of batey housing in the region of Santo Domingo. 

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the complexities, cultural contexts and consequences of service projects in the Dominican Republic
  • Enhance interpersonal skills and practice of group dynamics
  • Give examples of how experience relates to learning
  • Provide examples of how one's own pre-conceived notion are challenged
  • Maneuver government travel regulations and navigate international airports

Program Costs: 

The overall estimated cost is $3,185 and includes:

$1,800 program fee (covers in-country orientation, homestay, most meals, entrance fees, service project arrangements and guidance)

$600 estimated airfare (group travel)

$295 estimated travel preparation (passport, visa, immunizations, health insurance)

$191 1 credit summer tuition

$250 Books and miscellaneous
